The More You Listen, the Better People Can Hear You.
Listening isn’t simply a communication skill. It’s part of how we build relationships capable of holding difference.
“The more you listen, the better people can hear you.” Mr. Heinz Goldman
This is one of my favourite quotes. It makes the point powerfully and succinctly that every communication and every relationship is a dialogue not a monologue. If you have not listened, you cannot be sure your message is relevant or receivable to those you hope are listening.
These trying times remind us that behind every worker is a human. We need to be able to relate to each other’s experiences and perspectives. With ‘relationship’ as the base upon which we work together, the chance of us co-creating something of lasting value is higher. Listening is the tool that builds the bridges that link us, that helps us connect and relate to each other.
A strong bridge built by listening, can bear the weight of the many disagreements that may arise through the course of a working relationship.
Perhaps, before doing the next course or reading the next book on ‘Influencing Skills’, maybe instead take a week to become aware of your habits and skills as a listener.
Listening is a pretty intense and very rewarding habit.
How easy is it for you to listen?
Do you enjoy listening? Or are you biting your tongue waiting for your turn?!
Do you listen with an open or judgmental mind?
Do you pay attention to assumptions you make whilst listening?
Do you check you have understood the speaker?
